The Lowdown on Men’s Laser Hair Removal

Posted by MySkin Clinics, 18 March 2020

There have been a few notable trends that have emerged over the past decade: smartphones have been getting bigger; pants have been getting skinnier; and we’ve apparently reached peak beard.

But while facial hair may be the latest in hipster cool, an increasing number of men are opting to reduce their hair everywhere else.

It’s like if you took the body of Magic Mike and stuck Magnum PI’s head on top (now that we think about it, we’d love to see that. They could call it Magnum Mike).

If you’re considering going down the hair removal path, there are a few things you should know.

What should I look for in a laser hair removal clinic?

When looking for a laser hair removal clinic, there are few things you’ll want to make sure of. First, check they are using medical-grade laser technology (not IPL or a laser machine that’s not specifically designed for hair removal).

Laser hair removal uses highly advanced lasers set to a specific setting, depending on your hair type and skin colour. While a standard machine can treat most people with pale skin and dark hair, specific machines are required for people with darker skin. If you have a darker skin type, ask your chosen clinic whether they have machines that can treat you.

MySkin Clinics use the Candela GentleLASE and GentleLASE PRO, medical-grade lasers which are able to treat a broader range of skin types, and are robust enough for use on a man’s beard, back or arms.

How many treatments will I need?

Each client is different and how many treatments you’ll need will depend on a variety of factors, including your hair type and the area being treated.

Because the hair is targeted only during the growth cycle, it’s important you commit to a course of treatments over a period of months. If you miss a treatment or have big gaps between them, you may need more laser hair removal sessions in total.

Before you commit to a laser hair removal clinic, ask your consultant to give you an estimate on how many treatments you may need and the cost. At MySkin Clinics, we offer discounts for packages of six treatments and more, allowing you to save more overall.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

While having lasers pointed at your chest sounds painful (and not too dissimilar to a James Bond film) in actual fact the discomfort you feel will be minimal, and we do everything we can to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. Many clients describe it like being snapped by an elastic band – where you’ll feel a momentary flick that disappears immediately.

Men’s Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal among men has been getting increasingly popular, and we’re seeing more men come into our clinics each year for laser hair removal treatment.

With Melbourne’s fabulous outdoor lifestyle, there are plenty of times when you just want to strip down to a singlet top or bare chest at the beach or down at the park. But for men with excessively hairy backs, chests or upper arms, this can be uncomfortable. Not to mention, all that extra hair can mean you sweat more, leading to irritation.

Sometimes this extra hair is caused by high levels of testosterone. But this isn’t always the case. Genetics, ethnicity and age can all play a part.

And while we know our partner’s would love us no matter what we looked like, if you are embarrassed or uncomfortable in your own skin, it can make intimacy more difficult.

Laser hair removal can help solve these awkward situations and give you back your confidence.

What’s Involved With Laser Hair Removal for Men

When it comes to laser hair removal for men, we most commonly treat the areas on the back and shoulders, chest and stomach, along with the jawline, eyebrows and neck.

Laser hair removal involves a specialised and highly calibrated laser, which is designed to damage the hair follicles, preventing hair from growing back. The laser travels down the hair, heating the root and causing the hair to fall out and not grow back.

The laser only affects hair in the growth phase, so a few treatments are required to target all hair while it is growing. How effective each treatment is depends on a range of factors, including your hair and skin colour, and how the coarse the hair is. The best results occur if you have fair skin and dark hair, however MySkin Clinics carry a range of specialised lasers to target varying hair and skin types.

While most people need around 6 – 8 treatments, because men’s hair is usually quite dark and coarse, a few extra treatments may be required to permanently reduce unwanted hair.

Things To Know About Men’s Laser Hair Removal

If you’ve decided you’d like to go under the laser for some manscaping, there are a few things you’ll need to know.

First, remember that laser hair removal works on only hairs in the growth phase, so you’ll need a few treatments. And importantly, you’ll need to be consistent in your treatments. Your therapist will recommend a treatment plan during your initial free consultation, but you can expect to come in for around six treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart.

It’s also important that you don’t get any sun exposure on the treated area in the weeks before and after your laser hair removal treatment. So avoid going out in the sun and make sure you apply sunscreen and wear a hat if you’re getting treated on your face.

And if you’re a fan of the tan-in-a-can, hold off on that too as fake tanned skin can not be treated as it is more susceptible to burns and blisters.

Finally, remember that laser hair removal will permanently reduce your hair in the treated area. So be sure you want to lose hair there before coming in for treatment. This is especially important if you’re treating your neck and facial area as you won’t be able to grow your hair out in years to come.

At MySkin Clinics we’re experienced in treating unwanted hair in a range of places on men and women. Get in touch with us today to schedule your complimentary consultation.
