What Does Microdermabrasion Involve?

Posted by MySkin Clinics, 18 March 2020

If You Love Your Skin, Buy It Diamonds

If you’re like us, you’ll understand the deep satisfaction that comes with cleaning things; the superhuman power you feel when you rain down justice on dirt and muck.

If we could have one superpower, it’d be super-vacuum power. Which would explain why we’re so obsessed with Microdermabrasion.

Considered to be a method of skin rejuvenation and exfoliation, Microdermabrasion is actually so much more than that. What steam cleaning is to your carpets and professional cleaning is to your teeth, microdermabrasion is to your skin: the deepest clean you can get.

What Does Microdermabrasion Do?

While your skin may look and feel like a smooth surface, it isn’t. Think about it: your skin is filled with pores and follicles, constituting the skin’s deeper layers that aren’t so easily cleaned.

If your skin was flat, water and topical applications (such as your bottled cleansers and exfoliants) would be perfectly adequate to clean it. But since the dirt in pores sits below the surface layer of your skin, you need a deeper, more thorough method of exfoliation in order to give your skin a professional-grade clean.

This is where microdermabrasion comes in. At MySkin Clinics, we use medical-grade MINIVAC microhydrabrasion machines to extract dirt, oil and dead skin from deep within the pores, leaving you with an immediate, lasting glow – and a complete lack of blemishes.

‘Even after one 20 minute session, the benefits of microdermabrasion are noticeable, making it the perfect treatment for busy people whose full schedules tend to leave their skin neglected.’

Two Phases of Skin Rejuvenation

Although we made a comparison earlier between microdermabrasion and teeth cleaning, this wasn’t entirely accurate – Microdermabrasion is a lot less invasive (and a lot less painful!) than a trip to the dentist.

A Microdermabrasion session – usually lasting around 35-40 minutes – will contain two separate phases of cleansing and exfoliation:

The first stage of microdermabrasion consists of running a gentle, diamond-tipped vacuum over the surface of your skin. The soft suction motion of this first stage will work to exfoliate your skin and to remove dead skin from deep within the pores.

Once the diamond-tip treatment is complete, our therapists will commence stage two: the cleaning phase. To finish your treatment, your skin will be cleansed with a combination of aloe vera and water, flushing out the pores and follicles of any remaining dirt and oils to ensure you are left with the cleanest skin ever.

What Are the Benefits of Microdermabrasion?

One of the many amazing things about microdermabrasion is that the effects can be noticed almost immediately. Not only that, but you will experience the benefits whether you come in for a one-off session or a full course of treatments.

When used regularly, microdermabrasion treatments have significant anti-ageing effects on your skin. As dead skin cells are removed from the surface of the skin, the growth of new skin cells and the generation of collagen is promoted, resulting in a radiant, youthful look that defies the passing of the years.

Microdermabrasion’s long list of benefits can be experienced regardless of age or skin type, and include:

  • Softening of fine lines and wrinkles;
  • The smoothening of coarse skin;
  • Eradicating acne and acne scarring;
  • Minimising the appearance of pores;
  • Reducing the appearance of age spots and other forms of hyperpigmentation;
  • Increasing the effectiveness of other topical skincare treatments;
  • Improving the appearance of dull, tired, stressed and sun-damaged skin.

A reduction of pimples, anti-ageing properties and a healthy, glowing complexion all achieved in under an hour? Honestly – what’s not to love about Microdermabrasion?

How Long Does a Single Session Take?

Who would’ve thought that you could fit the deepest possible skin cleanse into a single lunch break?

Well, we did. And now we’re trying to spread the word.

Microdermabrasion is the deepest, most thorough clean you can give your skin. Resulting in an immediate, healthy glow, microdermabrasion is a professional skin treatment with zero downtime. And best of all? Treatment sessions take less than an hour.

The many benefits associated with microdermabrasion can be experienced after one treatment, or after a full course of treatments.

If you only want a single session of microdermabrasion – whether it’s to get your skin looking its best before a special occasion, or simply to indulge in a bit of no-excuses-needed self-pampering – then you’ll be able to fit the treatment into a lunch break.

A single session of microdermabrasion can usually be completed within 35-40 minutes. With results that are immediately noticeable, it’s the perfect skincare treatment for those on-the-go.

One of the best things about Microdermabrasion is that there is no downtime. The only common side effect is a slight, pink tinge to the skin that usually disappears in under 24 hours. Otherwise, as soon as you step outside the clinic, you’ll enjoy the benefits of smoother skin and a healthy, youthful glow.

‘Often referred to as a ‘lunchtime peel,’ microdermabrasion is a machine-assisted exfoliation treatment that can be performed in 35-40 minutes.’

Single Sessions vs. Course of Treatments

Even after a single 40 minute session, the benefits of microdermabrasion are noticeable. But the more you use microdermabrasion, the more benefits you’ll be able to enjoy.

Customers coming in for a single session of microdermabrasion usually do so for the healthy glow that is immediately visible as well as for the instant smooth skin feel. Your radiant glow will last for days after the session, and can be optimally maintained by cleansing twice daily and exfoliating at least once per week.

If you include microdermabrasion into your regular skincare routine, you’ll not only experience the immediate after-glow that a single session provides, but also a range of long-term benefits that will extend well into old age, helping you to defy the clock.

For ongoing recipients of microdermabrasion, some of the more lasting benefits include:

  • Profound anti-ageing effects;
  • Softening of lines and wrinkles;
  • Helping to smooth coarse skin;
  • Helps to rid skin of acne and acne scarring;
  • Minimises the appearance of pores;
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation (such as age spots);
  • Increases the effectiveness of other topical skin treatments;
  • Improves the appearance of dull, tired, stressed and sun-damaged skin.

How Often Can I Get Microdermabrasion?

Typically, the skin on your face regenerates every 30 days. This means that, if performed as a one-off treatment, the benefits of microdermabrasion are only temporary.

To make the most of its ongoing anti-ageing benefits, treatments should be repeated once every 2-4 weeks initially, gradually being drawn out to a monthly or bi-monthly basis.

If being used to treat specific skin conditions – such as acne scarring – anywhere between 6-12 treatments will be needed to see significant improvement in the skin.

Summary

The benefits of microdermabrasion are many and varied, and are visible immediately post-treatment. Even if you only have a single session performed, you can still enjoy visible skin improvement – but as with most skincare treatments, the more regularly you use it the more benefits you will see.

Usually categorised as a skin rejuvenation and exfoliation treatment, Microdermabrasion is the deepest clean you can give your skin.

Microdermabrasion sessions consist of two distinct phases:

  • An exfoliation phase which uses a diamond-tipped vacuum to remove dirt from deep within the pores, and;
  • cleansing phase which uses a combination of aloe vera and water to get your skin feeling fresh, cool and clean.

Even after one session under an hour, the benefits of microdermabrasion are noticeable, making it the perfect treatment for busy people whose full schedules tend to leave their skin neglected.

If used regularly, you will be able to benefit from the long list of advantages that Microdermabrasion offers your skin, including significant anti-ageing effects.

For an immediate, healthy glow, there’s nothing better than Microdermabrasion.
