While you might be feeling blah about the imminent arrival of cold weather in Melbourne (didn’t it just feel like the summer would last forever?), you’re probably not going to miss worrying about keeping those rogue hairs at bay, everyday.
One good thing about the colder seasons is being able to rug up in thick tights and jeans, meaning you don’t have to worry about regular hair removal until Spring.
But imagine not having to worry about hair removal, not just through Autumn and Winter, but for the rest of the year too. That’s possible with laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal gives you permanent reduction in unwanted hair. And now is a great time to start your laser hair removal process.
Why Summer Isn’t Always The Best Time to Start Laser Hair Removal
In the summer, you’re spending way more time outside. Plus, the gorgeous weather means you’re likely to be wearing cute little dresses that leave plenty of skin exposed.
So your skin is getting a lot more incidental sun exposure, just from being out and about.
But before your start a treatment of laser hair removal, it’s super-important that the area of skin hasn’t been exposed to sun for about 2-4 weeks.
You’re probably okay to get laser hair removal on your underarms and bikini area in the summer (unless you’re a total beach bunny). But for areas like your legs and face, it’s not necessarily a great idea to start treatment then.
If you do go out into the sun after your laser hair removal treatment you risk sun damage like hypo- and hyper-pigmentation (basically those white and brown spots on your skin).
Remember, you skin is extremely sensitive after treatment and those areas should not be exposed to direct and prolonged sunlight for a few weeks.
Why Autumn is a Good Time to Start Laser Hair Removal
The colder weather in Autumn and Winter means you’re way more likely to get less sun exposure outdoors, and even when you do head out you’ll be covered up. So it’s just a lot easier to protect your treated areas before and after laser hair removal.
And remember, you don’t just need to think about avoiding the sun for a few weeks. You’ll basically want to keep your skin protected during your whole laser hair removal cycle.
When you start on your laser hair removal journey, your therapist will recommend a schedule of treatments every 4-6 weeks apart and it’s important you stick to these timelines for the best results.
See, your hair grows and falls out in stages. The growth stage (called anagen) lasts from 3-5 years and usually around 85% of your hair will be in this stage at any one time. The next stage, catagen, is where the hair stops growing but is still firmly rooted in. This stage lasts about 2-3 weeks.
Then there’s the telegen stage, which lasts for about 6-8 weeks, where the hair follicle begins to pull back in preparation for growing a new hair. At the end of this stage, the hair falls out and the cycle begins again.
Now while you don’t really need to know all that stuff, it helps to understand why regular treatments are really important for successful hair reduction.
While most of your hair will be targeted in the first couple of treatments (and you’ll start to see results after 2-3 rounds), the follow up treatments are needed to get those hairs in the later growth stage.
So let’s do the maths on that.
If you got your first treatment on 20 March and came in the recommended four weeks for six treatments, you’d be totally done by October, just in time for the Spring racing season.
And of course you’d be totally hair free for summer.
Start now and you won’t miss out on any of Melbourne’s best months for showing off your gorgeous, smooth pins.
